Training providers must assess reading and numeracy capabilities using the online ACER SRNI assessment tool.
Training provider access to the SRNI tool is via the login they are issued for the CSPA, under Skills SA’s license.
- At a minimum training providers must use the SRNI to assess school students reading and numeracy capabilities.
- Alternatively, training providers may use the ACER CSPA reading and numeracy assessments in place of the SRNI assessment. The CSPA writing assessment may be used if required by the training provider.
- A reading and numeracy practice assessment is available and has shown improved school student performance when completed before they attempt the reading and numeracy assessment. The practice assessment can be allocated by the training provider through their login under Skills SA’s license.
Understanding and using the SRNI assessment tool
Training providers must use the Snapshot Reading and Numeracy Indicator (SRNI) to assess reading and numeracy in accordance with the VETRO UAN Guidelines.
Access to the SRNI is provided at no expense under the Department’s licence to training providers:
- with an FAA
- who have completed training in the use of the SRNI with a UAN mentor.
Complete SRNI training
Before training providers receive access to ACER's SRNI assessment tool, they will need to receive SRNI training.
Simply contact a UAN mentor who will kick-start this process.
Get access to the SRNI assessment tool
Training providers must use the SRNI tool under Skill SA’s license to undertake the reading and numeracy assessment in the VETRO UAN. Skills SA will not accept SRNI assessment results completed under another license.
Training providers will be issued a unique login for the tool under Skill SA’s license once they have completed training on the ACER platform with a UAN mentor.
See VETRO UAN Guidelines for more information.
Conduct a SRNI assessment
Once training providers have access to the SRNI assessment tool, they can conduct an assessment.
All reading and numeracy assessments conducted must be supervised and must not be emailed to a student to complete on their own.
Students will benefit from completing a practice assessment before starting their official assessment.
See VETRO UAN Guidelines for more information, including information on supervision.
Interpret the assessment result
Learners whose SRNI assessment results demonstrate they have met the Skills SA minimum ACSF exit level for reading and numeracy for their qualification may proceed in the VETRO UAN process.
Where a prospective student did not meet the minimum levels for their course of choice, training providers must then complete a CSPA assessment.
If the CSPA reading or numeracy results identify the school student is not at a minimum required, the training provider must arrange for the reading or numeracy results to be interpreted.
If you do not have access to a literacy and numeracy specialist, Skills SA provide a service at no cost. See Step 5 for more information.
See VETRO UAN Guidelines for more information.
